As professionals in roles of authority within the workplace—be it as human resource specialists, managers, or supervisors—we possess a unique capacity to support employees encountering diverse economic, work-related, educational, or environmental challenges distinct from our own experiences. Our positions inherently confer a degree of authority and control over access to vital resources that employees often require but may struggle to obtain independently. This complex dynamic underscores a fundamental truth: we predominantly operate from positions of power and privilege relative to our diverse workforce.

Confronting this reality of innate power and privilege isn't a simple task. Mentioning these concepts often triggers discomfort and unease in many individuals. And, it's important to note that having privilege and power doesn't negate personal hardships; it merely acknowledges the advantages afforded by our positions within the workforce.

Our roundtable discussion seeks to delve into this challenging yet necessary conversation. It aims to create a space where we can explore strategies to address power imbalances, foster inclusivity, and actively dismantle barriers that hinder equitable access to opportunities and resources for all employees. By openly engaging with and understanding these nuanced dynamics, we can work together to create a more just and supportive workplace environment.

Learning Objectives:

  • Discuss definitions of Power, Privilege, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in a safe environment
  • Identify and reflect upon where you are on the cultural competency continuum
  • Recognize structures of power from the standpoint of embedded privilege through guided activities
  • How to enact strategies to respond to unconscious and conscious biases to work towards achieving tangible equity and inclusion
